FINLAND!!! We Are The Winners Of Eurovision

Well thats me back home in Scotland after returning from Athens last night after a delay at Gatwick.
Myself and Ryan were welcomed by a typical Scottish downpour.

I am absolutely delighted that Lordi and Finland have won. It was terrific performance of a decent catchy song.
It totally breaks the mould of Eurovision which is a good thing as far as I am concerned.
Something that Daz Sampson was trying to do for the UK but with a different kind of style but not such
a good song.

So looking forward already to visiting our Finnish friends and cousins in Helsinki in 2007.
I have never been so can hardly wait to see what is reputed to be a lovely city.
After many years of struggle, since 1961 in fact, and never having a top 5 finish
finally Finland have proved that persistence does eventually pay off.

What this also confirms for me that the Eurovision song contest is no longer just a song contest but
due to televoting  it is now clearly based on overall performance and how it looks on our TV screens.
All the traditional style of catchy songs are just not making an impact unless they offer up a great
performance as well.

I was glad to see Finland ,Bosnia and Romania in the top4. Also I had also predicted a decent finish for Russia.
Sweden in 5th was about right I think and the fun element of Lithuania deserved them their best finish in 6th.
Ukraine had a good result in 7th and Armenia a great debut at 8th.
Greece in my honest opinion was dramatic over done but still a decent performance and 9th was a fair result for Anna.
Ireland in 10th was a great result for Brian and well deserved and means that Ireland are direct to the final next year.

In the lower results  Croatia I felt were a little bit low in 13th and should be disappointed.
I was also sad to see Germany finish as low as 15th. The UK in 19th was not really a surprise as i had always
thought it was either going to be top 5 or bottom 5 (so bottom 6 was not far wrong).
Malta though was the biggest shock for me, last place with one measly point. Thoroughly undeserved unless
the vocal was awful on the TV( I wont know that till I get the DVD).

So there we are another year over.
Many thanks to Keith and the whole AKOE06 team for the honour and pleasure of working with them again.
It was great to get the appreciation and nice comments on all my pictures. It was a new camera and it was
a huge bonus to find it was taking such good pics in the arena. It certainly as suggested brought the whole
Liveblog to life i feel.
I plan to create a CD of all the best ones from the Blog and others which I have downloaded.
If anyone would like a copy as a souvenir then please email me at a.j.main@ed.ac.uk and mark the subject
Eurovision 2006. I will try to send a copy as soon as I can produce them.

So as a final treat here follows a selection of the best ones from Lordi's Final performance.  Enjoy !!!

The funniest result!

Ok the children under 15 make the difference, but do this Finnish creatures express the middle class Europeans? Anyway I find it good news, that Lordi won, but I never could vote for it, as for me hard rock is revolutional when you are not affraid to be you, to show your face openly to the conservative society...This didn't happen in this Eurovision. Otherwise I believe that LT and Ukraine really were nothing songs. although the interesting perfomances, for such ungly songs...But my favourite was Ireland, I managed to send ten votes in the Final, but in my country's List never appear... The children are much more quick than me...So never again the people of 40 year's old can give the strength to their favourites song...So so simple!

Thanks for all the terrific pictures, Andrew. As you say, they give us a real glimpse of what it's like to be in the ESC arena. Regarding Malta, there are quite a few comments elsewhere on the blog but basically, the poor guy sang out of tune for most of the song (as did the French girl, but less so). The Maltese are probably gutted.

Yes, it's true. My friend and I really liked the Malta song but looked at each other in disbelief as the whole song was sung out of tune. Poor Malta. Bring back Julie & Ludwig I say!!

yes sadly the Greek "noise boys" did an atrocious Tv mix for Fabrizio
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-22 12:22 (UTC) (Link)
Yep, they mixed him a whole semi-tone sharp for the entire song! Amazing what technology can do these days, isn't it?

Re: Sound and mixing

Poor old Fabby f--ked it up!

Virgine actually didn't sound that bad in the end. She wasn't *completely* off-tune like I was expecting from the reports.

As already said, Fabrizio sounded so off it was ridiculous.
I actually didn't think La Vissi was over the top at all, I thought she was dignified and just damn powerful - and hot.;-)

I've said it before but I'll say it again - thanks guys for your awesome, full, personal, fun reporting! Looking forward to Helsinki!

Thanks and see you in Helsinki!

Thank you once again for great reporting guys, been enjoying every line! Still having a funny unreal feeling after the first finnish victory. For the first time during the voting I could, instead of fearing that Finland would not get any points at all and finish last, be excited about whether we get a 10 or a 12.

Can also report the the whole Finland is now planning next years finals. Many of the ideas people write in internet are quite bizarre but the enthusiasm is overwhelming. I really hope everyone will see a great show in my dear home country!

Thanks again!

Well done guys!

Great blog once again, and was nice to meet you at the EuroClub.
Think I've just about recovered from the Post-ESC blues (going back to work on Monday was no fun!).
And a big well done to Romania - great to see my favourite in the Top5,I I'm fairly convinced that we will all be heading to Bucharest sometime in the next five years.
See you all in Helsinki!
