Well done Brian!
Well done Lordi!
Romania woz robbed, but I'm glad Bosnia did well. I did a little better than breaking even on my Eurovision betting.

And WHY DID RUSSIA FINISH SECOND? He was awful! Cute, but awful.

Re: Hooray!

And wasn't the Dutch guy great? Giving hard time to Sakis ("You're like Will & Grace!" Brilliant!). Yeah, my favorite was Bosnia as well, but have no problems with Finland winning. Despite block voting, overall we can observe that countries more or less voted for the same songs, and they were in the top 10, right? Thx again for your coverage, untill next year! J from the US.

Re: Hooray!

....and Russia didn't finish last. Malta did and he wasn't cute.....in fact he was a little odd looking

Re: Hooray!

Why did I say that! I must be drunk.....all this cheering at modulations (is that right?). But the Russian guy was also at bit creepy. But not as much as the Maltese (falcon). Sorry, it's the Malibu talking :o)

Re: Hooray!

Yes, Romania was robbed - it was THE best vocal performance at ESC for years!

(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 22:45 (UTC) (Link)

so lordi it is...

well i am happy sweden didn't win. i found it to be the opposite of charming - rather plastic and unpleasant. quick run-through:

switzerland: nice, but boring.
moldova: weird, ont particularly well song - not memorable
israel: i completely forget this already. pleasant though.
latvia: that metal man made no sense, but i did like singing
norway: i really liked it, undeservedly so low
spain: nice - but what was with the butch lesbian dancer?
malta: he looked like tons of botox with a bad haicut.
germany: i loved them - they should have done better
denmark: weird, but she was cute and sang well
russia: he was cute but over-emoted - but it was a good song
macedonia: really badly sung, unimpressive
romania: very eurotrashy (which i like) and he sang really really well
bosnia/herzegowina: not my cup of tea but well-done
lithuania: annoying. that's all.
uk: i liked it. well performed, nice hook.
greece: i didn't originally like it but like it now. bad bad dress
finland: i was a little shocked, but i still like it better than a few others
ukraine: it was funny, and looked and sounded good
france: she sang better than i expected
croatia: i liked it. entertaining. she had a scary lip
ireland: good one - but boring. very green.
sweden: shiny plastic. did she leave out some of her glory-shouting?
turkey: i liked her. she was a mom in drag. cute.
armenia: oriental bondage. i really liked the song.
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-22 01:24 (UTC) (Link)

Re: so lordi it is...

good summing up on all the songs..
i agree with you about france i thought she sang very well too
i have the video of her performing live, the official video and
an mp3 of il etait temp..so i'm happy. she has a fantastic voice
i backed finland to win @ 18/1 and russia E/W @ 20/1 yippeee
i also had lithuania E/W at 50/1 so near and yet so far..

Finland rocks!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Finland! I think it was a cool winner, but I fear for the forthcoming esc, hope Europe still takes it seriously, and don't send kitsch songs en masse. Tal Sondak forever!!!!

Re: Finland rocks!!!!!!!

Yes, be interesting to see what happens next. I can't say anything very intelligent about Finland simply because I don't understand otr like that sort of music but I'm sure its good of its kind.

Thing is, it won because of hype and the circus effect - we have had whips and chains, and now monsters.

Whats next?

A song, sung by a good singer? Or will they always make up the rest of the top 5?

At least one relief - Sweden lost!
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 23:01 (UTC) (Link)

Re: Finland rocks!!!!!!!

YES, thank God for the "Sweden non win"
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 22:56 (UTC) (Link)
I am happy for Suomi...they had no 1 place, but they are for so long in competition. This one stood out really...nobody could compete with them even not Dima or Hari. And did you noticed that 8 out 10 semi-finalists ended in top10??????? It means that either semi-final songs were better or second time performing makes people to remember these songs better.
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 23:00 (UTC) (Link)

Worst Winner in 51 years!

This year's winner is the worst in the 51 year history of ESC, the only positive thing that I can say is that it's good to see a country who has been involved in ESC for so long was finally won, but with all respects to you above who are thrilled that Lordi won. This is not music!, how easy it is to sway people with a gimmick, who was it that said "The masses are asses". On a more postive note thanks to Brian Kennedy for a great performance and a respectable result for Ireland tonight. Germany deserved to do much better, but as for the UK, France and Spain they were nothing short of a disgrace. I do think that something needs to be done about the voting. I can see countries dropping out soon if things don't change. BTW the only reason that we gave 12 points to Lithuania, is because the 30,000 plus Lituanians who live here, voted for them.
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 23:11 (UTC) (Link)

Re: Worst Winner in 51 years!

I think the finnish song was quite good, but the costumes/masks was a bit strange....a bit surrealistic in esc. A catchy tune, but maybe not for granny......
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-21 10:30 (UTC) (Link)

Re: Worst Winner in 51 years!

30,000 lithunians voted. So, what happened to those votes last year and the year before that!! They voted this year for them because it was just pure FUN!! Well done to Lithuania for taking the mickey and doing a grand job, but with Finland as the winner, don't you think we're now heading for 'EUROVISION DRESS CONTEST'.
The Bosnian song proved that pure class can still triumph in this contest and had the drawn not been unfavourable to them and been drawn 20-24th, then we'd all be celebrating a BOSNIAN victory.
Can't wait to see next year's entries though - what will we be entertained by??
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 23:06 (UTC) (Link)

What about Ukraine?

She was the true winner....all though her english was a bit bad

Germany got robbed

15th place for Germany?? I'm sorry but that's just laughable, i hope they change the format!
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 23:17 (UTC) (Link)

Re: Germany got robbed

No no never was a good song, but it was easily forgotten in the middle....also Denmark. And both were excellent performances
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-21 00:08 (UTC) (Link)

Re: Germany got robbed

the german song was the only one who would survive in the charts without the ecs hype imo!
But you know the ecs is nowadays 33%song 33%which country you represent and 33%show. It's really sad that such a good song dind't get a higher place, but thats life:)
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-21 10:34 (UTC) (Link)

Re: Germany got robbed

Unfortunately, like the UK, Germany have lost the plot on this contest. They entered only 3 songs, so how can they expect to do well when their entry , which was 'American Style' country and western is not appealing to the mass european voter.
I know Sweden are disappointed with their 5th spot, but if you would have watched Melodiefestival , they had any one of 6 songs that could have easily represented their country and done extremely well.
My top marks go to Sweden for showing how it can be done, just wished BWO had gone through.
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-21 14:27 (UTC) (Link)

Re: Germany got robbed

well then the mass european voter has no taste! We all know that the quality of the songs isn't that important anymore, more important is stupid dancing and of course from which country you are! I mean russia could send a guy reading a newspaper on the stage and he would still get 50 or 60 points! And i have no problem with finland winning it because that was good song too or bosnia that was also good! Sweden wasn't bad but i am the only one who things that we heard this kind of song a thousand times already, it sounded like abba "the winner takes it all" imo. Or greece, i mean she had a wonderful voice BUT the song itself wasn't anything special! The Bottom Line is Germany deserved a much much better place!
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 23:16 (UTC) (Link)

Good old voting procedure back in ESC!!!!

Maybe next year? It was messy with the first 7 points in a row, and then having to keep up with the 8, 10 and 12's. Not as exciting as previous years....

Country and Western... and rap

I think tonight proved that neither country and western, nor rap, is popular throughout Europe. I thought Germany would do better but it obviously left most people cold.

As this is the AKOE page - I'd just like to point out that Ireland gave Lithuania their only 12 points! Hmmm.... Anyway I predicted Lit would come 6th, so happy with that!

Onneksi olkoon Suomi!

I am very happy Finland won! I liked the song for a while, though never put any money on it because of the 5th placing for Norway last year. I just didn't think ESC was ready for rock! Now I know!

Great Sweden didn't win! Or come top 3! Hurrah! Carola sang way better in the semi. She seemed to miss out some of her big ad-lib notes near the end. Rubbish!

Excellent placings for Russia, Bosnia and Romania. Though I wanted Bosnia to win, 3rd place is good enough. More good songs needed! Mihai sang SO well, I was thinking it could go and win. Well, until Finland came on!!

I was disappointed with Germany. Found it very boring. UK was great, but coming after Lithuania was bad. Spain and France were just shit. The big 4 are really the worst 4 in the contest. UK has some great indie/rock/metal bands, why not send one of those next year? We could do really well with a good rocky song. Come on BBC, put some welly into MYMU!

Very disappointed with Norway's position. She sang amazingly well, and probably was tainted by singing so early on. Shame.

Malta was dire, but better than Moldova, France and Israel. I do hope they win the contest soon! Bless 'em, must be hard being so tiny, and having no neighbours :(

In conclusion, Onneksi olkoon Suomi! I want to go to Finland and watch next year. Maybe Nightwish can perform, get Tarja back!

New voting

The new voting was really terrible, as was the scoreboard. It was so hard to see how many points each country had and it was hard to keep up. I really wish they go back to saying all the points next year, but I don't think all 38 countries should read points out. Maybe all the countries that aren't performing should have their votes added up, and given out as "the others". That way, 25 sets of votes will be given out, 1 - 12, and it will be much better!

Let's see what an amazing contest Finland will do!
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-21 10:39 (UTC) (Link)

Re: New voting

Lets have the scoring in the final ONLY completed by the the countries that qualify, omitting 23 countries. This would eliviate alot of any neighbourly voting as half of them wouldn't but competing and make sute that every country entered a greater standard of song. There were only 8 countries who could win this year, the rest just were not up to scratch.
Finally, it's time the BIG 4 were laid to rest on this
UK - Just Dire
Germany - Pants
Spain - Pitiful
France - Why did they bother
It's just not fair anymore
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-21 16:27 (UTC) (Link)

Re: New voting

It would make a contest less interesting for those countries that don't participate in the final because there would be no point in watching the contest if they couldn't vote and decide the wining country. I think that the permission to vote is given for everyone in order not to lose viewers.

(Anonymous) at 2006-05-20 23:44 (UTC) (Link)
i dont agree that the only reason ireland gave 12 pts to lith was coz of their ex-pats.
we all voted for them...and we're 100%irish - if there's such a thing
it was so bad it was good....and we loved it!!!!
if the ex-pats rule came into force, we wudda given poland 12
and that didnt happen
ireland always votes for the unusual
sure we gave austria 12points in 2003, except eircom crashed, making it nul and void!

anyway....everyone seems to have enjoyed the nit.....and to 'finnish' (geddit?) on a positive note....carola didnt win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Anonymous) at 2006-05-21 03:18 (UTC) (Link)
Like so many before me I am baffled at Germany's poor result. They really deserved to do so much better. Obviously hype and gimmick prevailed and unfortunately we must brace ourselves for what this could mean for next year.

My only other criticism of this year's competition, other than the result, is the change to the voting. By announcing only the top three from each country much of the enjoyment of the voting was lost and I think there was even a wee bit of confusion at times - I think a review is required.

Thanks for all the great information and comments over the last week - it has really added to the build up.

Chris - Glasgow

The real problem

Hi Peter,

Good job as always.

Didn't like the Finnish song that much, but I didn't mind seeing them win after all these years. So much for those who thought that a western European country would never win again.

Yes, at some point in the future, a simple song will win again, but it looks like the gimmicks have control for now.

Despite all of the complaints about voting biases, that doesn't seem like the real problem to me.

It seems much more unfair to me that the top ten contained eight semifinalists, and all ten of the semifinalists made the top twelve. Yes, I know that the semifinalists got an extra boost this year from late draws, but somebody on this blog (I can't remember whether a member of the team or someone in the comments) rated the standard of the songs of the pre-qualified finalists higher than that of the semifinalists.

The same thing happened (to a lesser degree) in 2004 and last year. Maybe the EBU doesn't want to fix this (it does yield a higher "churn" of the finalists, and also boosts the results of those who started in the semifinal), but they can fix it a lot easier than they can regional voting patterns.

sorry but...

Eurovision gets more stupid as the years go by...finland was crap! russia dull and many of the others just as bad ..the good songs eg greece, sweden, ireland, malta are just forgotten as the baltic states vote for each other as do other states..dunno if i will even bother watching next year

I can't believe we finally did it! Finland is going mental right now! Everybody's in Lordi-fever and last night people were singing Hard Rock Hallelujah on the streets. :) 1,6 million people watched Lordi win out of our 5,2 million population. It's amazing. They are throwing a party for Lordi in Helsinki on Friday and that is the one not to miss! ;)

Thanks to Lordi for this great result. There has been several shows on TV during this spring that celebrate the 40th time we take part, and the winning really crowns it.

The head of the Finnish delegation said that Finland will organize the greatest ESC ever next year, most likely in Helsinki. The most apparent venue is going to be Hartwall Areena, which can put up 12 000 viewers. So we'll see you there. ;)

I'm still speechless. Thank you Europe. I love you.
